The YCN Student Awards Annual 11/12 is here!
As the YCN Student Awards approach their tenth year, we are delighted to publish another edition of our YCN Student Awards Annual. Showcasing all the stellar work commended as part of the most recent programme, as well as this year’s live briefs, we also catch up with commendees from previous years’ Awards to discuss how they’re practices have grown and evolved since participating.
We are thrilled to have collaborated with photographer Nick Ballon throughout this year’s annual. Nick produced some terrific portraits for our profile pieces on previous Awards commendees, including Sophie Browness, Matt Ivey, Vicky Simmons, James Dawe and Rick Dodds and Steve Howell. He also photographed this year’s Student Of The Year Award, created by lighting designer Phillip Oakley, for the front cover.
As ever, the publication marks the launch of the latest annual YCN Student Awards; presenting new live creative challenges - from the likes of Google, Heinz Salad Cream and SEGA - for all those who wish to tackle them. More information on the YCN Student Awards programme can be found here.
A limited number of copies of this year’s annual are now available to buy online here.

Important information about YCN Student Awards eligibility
As of this year, the YCN Student Awards are open only to those in full or part time education, anywhere in the world.
In previous years recent graduates, not yet working in the industry, have been eligible to enter. This is no longer the case.
The good news is that a brand new Awards programme designed especially for them will be launching soon.

Coming Call for Entries

The Call for Entries for the 2011/12 YCN Student Awards will launched on Monday. Recent YCN 'Student of the Year' Dominic McKenzie has updated our chalk board accordingly. We think this year's briefs are the best set yet, but you can be the judge of that- on Monday.

SEGA’s Sonic Generations Event

To celebrate Sonic’s 20th Anniversary SEGA have launched the new game, Sonic Generations. The game sees Sonic playable as both the classic 1991 character, and the modern video game hero! Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time.
A press event was organised by Mischief PR at the Future Gallery on 25th October 2011 to launch the game. Students commended for the YCN Student Awards 10/11 SEGA brief attended the event, and their commended work was on display.

What goes on inside Daniel Frost’s head…
Shown above is Daniel Frost's wonderful introductory film, produced for the YCN Student Awards Ceremony 2010/11.
Visualising what goes on inside his head, the animation was shown before Daniel presented the commendations for the Fedrigoni, Open University and 20th Century Fox briefs.
One of six such introductions tailor-made for each of our super-talented guest presenters, the series was created in collaboration with animation duo Plastic Horse. In addition, several of the films (including Daniel's) feature the innovative aural input of Box of Toys Audio.
To view the series, as well as Plastic Horse's visual announcement of the surprise giveaway of a P&O mini-cruise, visit our Vimeo page here.

YCN Student Awards Ceremony

We had a brilliant time last night in Shoreditch Town Hall, commemorating and congratulating all those commended as part of the most recent YCN Student Awards.
Guided through the evening by charismatic presenting from Pavel Douglas, we were proud to be joined by guest presenters Johanna Lundberg and Elin Svensson (a.k.a. Åh), Sam Green, James Gilpin, James Chambers and Tom Judd (of Chambers Judd), Hattie Newman and Daniel Frost. In addition, everyone was treated to several wonderful films by animation duo Plastic Horse, including introductory shorts created in collaboration with each of our six guest presenters (thanks to BOX OF TOYS AUDIO for the amazing sound design too).
With game show-inspired props and table settings by Anna Lomax, the surprise giveaway of a P&O mini-cruise to Margie Hammond (commended for the Thames Clippers brief) and glitter-decorated everything, it truly was an amazing event. It was brilliant to meet and applaud all of our 2010/11 winners, and, at the end of the night, see Philip Oakley presented his custom-designed 'A' award to Student of the Year Dominic Mckenzie (from Cambridge School of Art, who entered the Open University brief).
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, helped out, presented and cleaned up(!), and again, a big congratulations to all of last night's winners.
As always we'd like to say a special thank you to our sponsors, who provided the fantastic programme of 2010/11 briefs: 20th Century Fox, Boost, British Music Experience, Direct Line, Fairtrade, Fedrigoni, Green & Black's, Marks & Spencer, P&O Ferries, SEGA, Ted Baker, Thames Clippers, The Big Issue, The Open University, Tuborg, Warp and Whyte & Mackay.
A selection of photographs by Owen Richards and Elinor Jones are shown below, you can view all of them on our Flickr. A Call for Entries for the new 2011/12 YCN Student Awards will be published in late October.

We enjoyed a visit from Stephen F Austin State University students today! The students are on a study trip and visited us to hear about our current projects, the differences of working in the creative industry in Europe compared to the US and to be introduced to the YCN Student Awards programme. We loved the crest we were presented with and wish the students all the best for their time in the UK!

Kingston University graphic design degree show

Having already seen this year group's degree show at Kingston itself, it was great to see it again last night- this time curated by the students themselves at the Bargehouse. The space at the base of the Oxo Tower is a large and imposing one, but they did a great job of creating an impressive show throughout. As we have come to expect from Kingston, the standard was very high.
Claire Gilmartin and Sarah Hogan's double-sided book "What else do you do?" was a great example of quality photography and user interaction.

Hannah Shipley's project about Branding Medals was refreshing.

Fantastic light bulb from Helen Parry.

Ness Wright's key visual of her fishtank bag got a lot of people talking- just want you want from a graduate's portfolio.

The show in general was full of thought provoking and humorous work. It's well worth checking out- it runs at the Bargehouse till the 26th.
